How long has SAO been in existence?
St. Aloysius Orphanage was established after the cholera epidemics took the lives of many Cincinnatians in 1837. SAO was founded to aid the children left homeless by this misfortune. In 1861, to better accommodate the needs of children, SAO moved to its present location - 16 beautiful acres in north-central Cincinnati, just off the Norwood Lateral on Reading Road.

Is SAO still an orphanage?
St. Aloysius has grown and changed throughout its 167 years to better serve children in need. Today SAO serves as a social service and mental health agency providing a pro-active resource to children and families in the Greater Cincinnati area. SAO offers a number of different programs and services including an Education Center, foster care, and residential services.

How is SAO funded?
SAO is funded largely through Medicaid billing, public service organizations, and grants from a number of supportive agencies and organizations. SAO also relies heavily on financial contributions and support from individuals in the community. Who does SAO serve?
Through a number of programs at SAO, we serve children who have severe emotional, and/or behavioral problems, and their families.

What is SAO vision for the future?
SAO is the Family Teaching Center for the tri-state region. We provide the tools for children and their families to be safe and successful at home, in school and in their community. SAO works to grow its programs and extend its services to become the leading provider of child and family services in the region.
